Story of Finland’s Independence

Finland celebrates its 100th Independence Day on 6 December 2017. Independence was made possible by the development of the nation, upheavals in Europe and the nation’s strong desire for independence. Before independence, Finland was part of Russia as an autonomous Grand Duchy for 108 years. Finland became a Nordic society during 600 years of Swedish rule. This site describes events and notable personalities in the history of independent Finland. The aim is to help answer the question of how Finland became independent.
